Frases de gandhi en español

Famous phrases of life

Mahatma Gandhi was one of the most prominent figures of Indian nationalism during the process of India’s independence from the United Kingdom. He was responsible for introducing novel strategies of peaceful disobedience and the rejection of armed struggle at the time of decolonization. His ideas ultimately proved successful for his political movement.

But, beyond this, Gandhi became one of the great symbols of pacifism during the 20th century, along with other figures such as the American Martin Luther King or the South African Nelson Mandela.

Gandhi’s image is far from that of the classic mass leader. This simple man with a sickly appearance managed to become the leader of one of the most powerful nationalist movements of the 20th century.

Gandhi’s words on life

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. That was his real name. But history knows him as Mahatma Ghandi, as the poet Rabindranath Tagore renamed him. In Sanskrit, Mahatma means something like ‘great soul’. And Gandhi’s nonviolence had a lot to do with that moniker.

“There are many causes for which I am willing to die, but none for which I am willing to kill”, he wrote in 1927. A statement that captures the essence of his philosophy, Gandhian nonviolence. But how did a young lawyer come up with such a statement?

After studying law in England, Gandhi lived for a time in South Africa. And it was there that he suffered prejudice and discrimination because of his race. Thus began his work in politics and peaceful civil rights activism.

Later, on his return to India, he traveled all over the country. There his speeches combined politics and passages from the holy books of different religions. And in time he became the leader of India’s independence movement against British power. But far from encouraging the masses to armed struggle, Gandhi’s nonviolence promoted peaceful resistance and new modes of opposition.

Mahatma Gandhi was born in 1869 in British India, and devoted much of his life to committing himself to the Indian nationalist movement. Despite British rule, he always based his defense on a categorical rejection of armed struggle, establishing other peaceful methods of social protest such as the hunger strike, and spending several times in jail. This earned him the consideration of national hero. In addition, Gandhi always advocated the defense of the lower classes of society, as well as the peaceful coexistence of different religions and was one of the first people to defend vegetarianism, for rejecting outright any kind of violence or abuse against living beings. His life would end on January 30, 1948 in New Delhi, when he was assassinated by a radical Hindu related to extreme right-wing groups in India, who shot him three times while he was praying as he did every night. Gandi left a legacy in the form of thought that we remember now with the 20 quotes that everyone should know.
