Rococo is defined as an individualistic, anti-formalist and courtly art. It is characterized by a taste for luminous, soft and clear colors. Louis XV’s most famous mistress, Jeanne-Antoine Poisson – Marquise de Pompadour – was the most effective protector of the court’s rococo artists, as she commissioned buildings and paintings that constitute the apogee of the rococo period.
