L’art

Faced with the irruption of private television in the French audiovisual market in the 1980s, the French President François Mitterrand had proposed the creation of a cultural and educational television channel with a European vocation.[1] This project was linked to the development of satellite television, in particular the upcoming launch of the European satellite TDF-1.[2] La Sept began broadcasting in France as a television channel on May 30, 1989.

La Sept began broadcasting in France as a television channel on May 30, 1989. The pact laying the foundations for European Cultural Television (ECC) was signed on October 2, 1990, one day before German reunification.[1] Arte’s main asset is the Arte channel.

Arte’s main asset is the television channel, whose content is produced in French and German. Over time, services were expanded: in 2002 the French subsidiary inaugurated Arte Radio, a web version specialized in podcasting,[8] and in 2007 an Internet TV platform (Arte +7) was created, which allows to watch all programs up to one week after the original broadcast.[9]
