“Estaba triste. Me decepcionó”, dijo.

“I definitely think there’s a tale of less,” Ramirez-Arellano said. “Especially when you look at the number of people who went to food distribution sites during the pandemic. It’s something Vega also saw in her community of approximately 2,300 people. Many people just didn’t respond, she said. “There were a lot of rumors and unfortunately here, we hadn’t had a chance for [the census] to really explain itself,” Vega said. “For a lot of people, we went by hearsay. Things like, ‘oh, if you give your information in the census, immigration is going to come and take you.'”

Until arriving at Entroncamento, the train dispels all the myths that placed it as a transport of the past. It is faster, more comfortable and cheaper than any other means of transport to travel the almost 100 kilometers that separate the town from Lisbon. With an advantage: it transports hundreds of passengers and emits residual CO2. At 9:23 a.m., it leaves us at the station in the area that owes the most to the railroad in Portugal.

Of the 15 passengers who boarded the train at Entroncamento, the vast majority got off at Portuguese stations (Abrantes, Crato, Elvas). Only a Portuguese couple, who went shopping in Badajoz, and two Dutch friends, who took the train to Seville there, covered the 174 kilometers of the total journey, in two hours and fifty minutes.

But it is clear that this is not the priority of Lisbon, which, for land-use planning reasons, wants to build the high-speed Lisbon-Porto-Vigo connection first. In fact, far fewer people live between Lisbon and Badajoz than between Lisbon and Vigo.  This Atlantic corridor will reduce by almost half the current train travel time between Lisbon and Porto (it will take one hour and fifteen minutes) and will leave Vigo one hour away from Porto. When the section is operational, announced the Portuguese Minister of Transport, Pedro Nuno Santos, the air bridge between the two largest Portuguese cities will no longer make sense.
