On February 13, 2006, the French high-speed train (TGV) broke its speed record on the Paris to Strasbourg section, reaching 553 km/h (343 mph). Its previous record was set in 1990, when it reached a speed of 515.3 km/h (385.3 mph). To obtain this top speed, a configuration specially prepared for the occasion was used, consisting of three passenger cars and two locomotives, although it has not been officially recognized by the SNCF or Alstom.
On April 3, 2007, an Alstom V-150 train once again broke the world speed record on rails by running at 574.8 km/h on one of the sections of the new high-speed line from Paris to Strasbourg. This technical feat, prepared for months, was accomplished by the French railway company (SNCF), the railway network that owns the tracks, and the train’s constructor, Alstom. The train’s power was increased for the occasion: several supplementary engines were placed throughout the vehicle, and the wheels were larger than those of an ordinary TGV, so that a high speed could be reached without overheating the machinery. At the same time, the electrical power on the line was increased and the catenary that powered the train was reinforced, as well as the ballast, the layer of aggregate that is spread over the railroad yard to settle, hold the sleepers on it and improve the transmission of loads from the structure to the yard; all this in order to withstand the intense vibrations.

New Avlo – Renfe’s low cost Alta Velocidad trainRenfe-Avlo is Renfe’s new Alta Velocidad-Larga Distancia product and will start running on June 23, 2021 on the Madrid-Barcelona-Figueres line. Avlo trains can travel up to 300 km/h, all seats are Economy class with assigned seating.

The high-speed trains also pass through the historic cities of Segovia and Valladolid to León, located in the western region of the country, and will eventually be extended to Asturias and the Basque cities of Vitoria, Bilbao and San Sebastián.
Construction of a Y-shaped network connecting the Basque autonomous community’s main conurbations began in 2006, but progress has been slow and the US$6.8 billion project is not expected to reach Bilbao until at least 2025.

The construction of the high-speed network has meant a considerable economic effort for the country, so its profitability or socioeconomic value is under study. The Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF) published a study in 2020 in which it ruled that, despite the benefits in travel time and cost savings and the overall positive profitability, the investment could not be recovered and proposed diverting the money to other more needed and used services, especially the Cercanías and Media Distancia services. At their debut on April 21, 1992, the maximum commercial speed of the first Renfe 100 series AVE trains was 250 km/h, allowing a travel time between Madrid and Seville of two hours and 45 minutes,[21] with the speed to be progressively increased. Thus, on October 18, 1992 Renfe announced the increase of the top speed to 270 km/h, reducing the travel time Madrid-Seville to two and a half hours,[27] and introduced new high-speed services from Madrid to Ciudad Real and Puertollano under the brand name “AVE Lanzadera” (predecessor of the current Avant). [27] On April 23, 1993, the speed record for AVE trains was reached at 356.8 km/h, which allowed commercial operation to begin on September 12, 1994 at 300 km/h on long-distance AVE trains with a duration of two hours and fifteen minutes.
