Woman with a parasol

the stroll painting

This is Monet’s most famous painting because it is the one that gave its name to the impressionist movement (Degas, Renoir, Cezanne…). Dated 1872, the painting represents the port of Le Havre, the city where the artist spent most of his childhood. This oil painting on canvas, 47 x 64 centimeters, is currently on display at the Marmottan Monet Museum in Paris.

It is a portrait of his wife Camille and son Jean in Argenteuil. The painting is so natural that it almost looks like a photograph, except that this 100 x 81 centimeter oil on canvas probably took Monet several hours. The painting is on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, USA.

The Magpie is an oil on canvas that Monet painted during the winter of 1868-1869 near the commune of Étretat in Normandy. One of the outstanding features of this work is that it represents his first snowy landscape. Of the pastoral genre, this work is in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, France.

monet’s paintings

This work takes place during the period in which he and his family lived in Argenteuil near the Seine River, something very favorable for an impressionist author like Monet, who was fond of portraying water. They established their residence in this area due to the influences of his friend Édouard Manet. In this context, he was offered a studio in the park at his disposal to execute his works in the open air. Monet was very impressed by the floating nature of the studio, which allowed him to capture the waters of the river from it.

The portraits in this work are his wife Camille and his son Jean; he creates in the figure of Camille a great monumentality by focusing from below, taking advantage of the unevenness of the terrain, which can be seen in the work. With these characteristics in the work, it should highlight above all the part of the sky, but it is not so, he manages to show all the elements in a proportionate manner. This is done by linking the colors, making the colors that stand out the most are those of the lower part that connect with the color of the umbrella, thus playing with the viewer’s vision. While in contrast, the clothes of both seem to blend with the sky, linking with the clouds. With her son, she chooses to apply reddish shades, highlighting him against the background. She completely rejects black for the shadows, using mainly violet, and plays with the light in the dresses whose glazes let this luminosity pass through.

Woman with Parasol was painted outdoors, probably in a single session lasting several hours. The artist intended the work to convey the sense of an informal family outing rather than a formal portrait, and used the pose and location to suggest that his wife and son interrupted their walk while he captured their portraits. The brevity of the moment portrayed here is conveyed by a repertoire of lively brushstrokes in vibrant colors, hallmarks of the style in which Monet was central. Bright sunlight shines behind Camille to bleach the top of her parasol and the flowing fabric at her back, while colorful reflections from the wildflowers below touch her forehead with yellow.
