Vincent Willem van Gogh (Dutch Vincent van Gogh (?-i) [ˈvɪnsɛnt fɑŋ’ɣɔx]) (Zundert, March 30, 1853-Auvers-sur-Oise, July 29, 1890) was a Dutch painter, one of the leading exponents of Post-Impressionism.
He painted some 900 pictures (including 43 self-portraits and 148 watercolors) and made more than 1600 drawings. A central figure in his life was his younger brother Theo, an art dealer in Paris, who gave him continuous and disinterested financial support. The great friendship between them is documented in the numerous letters they exchanged from August 1872. Of the 800 surviving letters from the painter, some 650 were to Theo, the others are correspondence with friends and family.

With an earthy, almost baroque palette, Van Gogh depicts the scene of a peasant family sharing at dinner the potatoes they have grown themselves. He has done what previous artists have not done: he has “unmake-up” the characters, he has shown them in their rudeness and in their difference.
With this, he has said no to the bourgeois gaze that conforms itself to picturesqueness in order not to take charge of the social gap. This painting corresponds to the painter’s first stage, which some call the black stage, which took place during his stay in Nuenen.

Today, the name of Vincent Van Gogh is remembered as one of the greatest artists of the late 19th century. Born in Groot-Zundert in 1853, the painter would have a short but very prolific career in the plastic arts and would leave as a legacy jewels such as The Starry Night or The Sunflowers within a variant of impressionism that he and his fellow painters would call post-impressionism.
While living in Arles, in 1888 Van Gogh had the idea of painting the place where he lived. He first sent his brother Theo a sketch of the work he was working on and then did the same with his friend Paul Gauguin. In one of his letters he even explained the importance of color in this new work. In fact, after leaving the hospital in 1889 he wrote about this work: “when I saw my canvases again after my illness, the one that seemed best to me was The Room”.
Painted in 1888, it is one of the author’s most famous landscapes. It shows a sower in the middle of June working in the field with ripe wheat in the background. In it you can see that almost magical stroke of Van Gogh.
