As soon as he acceded to power he had to face a war against the two neighboring European powers, England and France. He achieved the withdrawal of the French army that had invaded Holland (1672-73) and peace with England (1674). Through his marriage to the daughter of the Stuart heir (the future King James II of England) in 1677, he reversed the alliances, forming a European coalition opposed to the hegemony of the France of Louis XIV, which he forced to guarantee the independence of the Netherlands (Peace of Nijmegen, 1678).

However, William was to betray his father-in-law, the Catholic James II, when he was confronted in his country with the opposition of the Anglican Church and the Protestants who dominated Parliament; they called William to their aid, who did not hesitate to disembark with his army in Torbay and to lead the English “Glorious Revolution” of 1688.

That revolution, of Protestant, parliamentary and Whig inspiration, dethroned James II for fear of seeing a Catholic dynasty consolidate on the English throne and tending to imitate French absolutism; the rebels crowned in his place William III, who could claim rights to the throne both for being the grandson (on his mother’s side) of Charles I of England and for being married to Mary Stuart.
