Paige (Rachel McAdams) falls into a coma after being in a car accident with her husband Leo (Channing Tatum). When she awakens, she has lost all of her recent memory and remembers nothing of their love story. He must fight to save their romance, their lives.
In ‘All the days of my life’ (The Vow, 2012) everything goes wrong, including and especially the drama, which is so implausible that it makes the film almost bad, but, in fact, very good because all the actors play a hyper-conventional character in a very dedicated way and, although it is impossible to shed a single tear, the fun is served. It’s a hyper-crazy and juvenile version of Noa or the melodramatic variation of ’50 first dates’ (2004) that you never wanted to see, but that doesn’t matter, because Hollywood’s destiny is to make you believe that you did.
Then, a flashback. There, the character and Channing Tatum’s interpretative style, patenting the canallita-pero-cercano-baby style that he has demonstrated so well in his career, reaches heights. That first date with yellow post-its, guitar photo and, surprise surprise, expensive lingerie is part of the most enormous scenes of unintentional sci-fi-cockiness I’ve seen in recent cinema. Considering they’re cute, he’s an intimate cad and she’s creative, adorable and no less beautiful most of the time, how can we not think they’re the perfect couple? In fact, shot in a conventional way is the scene in which McAdams, touching the sky of the sublime heterosexual manhood, forgives Tatum’s early poop in the car: if that’s proof of marriage, what can it be?
film where the boy has an accident and is left in a coma.
Each one of us is like a box. Inside it we keep the pieces of our life and it is the set of them that makes us move forward. However, if someone suddenly opens the lid of our box and removes from it a group of memories and events that we had there, wouldn’t they also be removing part of our being? It would be as if we had not taken those steps that have pushed us to grow, to know ourselves or to choose our own path. Could we recover everything again, just as we had preserved it? That is the question that circulates and sustains the plot of this romantic drama, based on a true story.
The actors’ performances take on greater force through their ability to demonstrate the psychological debate they face than through words. The viewer’s attention falls on Leo’s character, infected by the pain he suffers from the loss of his wife and motivated by the admirable positive stance and determination to win her back, “loving her as she is, not as he expected her to be” and “in loving her, no matter what difficulties they may encounter”.

Jota Bayona is a rider of emotions. He rides on our back and takes us wherever he pleases. In The Orphanage he rode through our fears, in The Impossible he galloped through our anguish… And in A Monster Comes to See Me he rides on the deepest sadness: to assume that you have to lose the one you love the most. The film is a visual marvel that roots you already from the first half hour, keeps you stiff during the trunk and, when you get to the branches, you will see that there are more tears than leaves on your face. Full throttle. Does it get what it wants? More than any other.
In the dictionary, next to the definition of “dramón”, there is a still from this film. In some parts it could pass for an Antena 3 after-lunch movie -when it is shown on television it is always in that time slot-, but Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts raise the level a lot. The plot is conceived as a sentimental drama -the conflicts between a woman and the mother of her partner’s children- but the illness of the second one changes the perspective completely. This movie is perfect if you want to cry but surrounded by nice feelings, not bad feelings.
