Meanwhile in the land of the living, Carlos is on the outskirts of the city with Chakal’s army. Joaquin was about to marry Maria (both notably saddened by Manolo’s death), until someone shouts interrupting the wedding, announcing that the bandit Chakal has arrived. Back in the land of the Forgotten, the bulls from the bullfight unite to form a giant bull that tries to destroy Manolo. After the beast crashes giving Manolo the opportunity to kill it, Manolo refuses and decides to play his guitar, singing a song in which he apologizes to the bull for the unjust death of his fellow man at the hands of the Sanchez family bullfighters. The bull surrenders and disappears into hundreds of yellow petals (resting in peace). Recognizing Manolo’s triumph, Xibalba joins the Catrina and the Wax Man so that the three of them can revive Manolo.

In the end, the fact of being a told story is nothing more than a way of giving the sensation that we are being told a story and this resource only has a real importance at the beginning and at the end -there is some interruption so that we do not forget and reinforce what is wanted to transmit in certain moments, but it does not contribute too much-. The romantic triangle is then left to fulfill its function, although paying special attention to Manolo’s character.
Let’s start with the virtues: ‘The Book of Life’ escapes the dynamic one would expect from that trio, managing to make her a strong woman with her own ideas who doesn’t succumb to the easiest seduction methods, while also avoiding the tendency to turn one of the two men into the villain. Then it’s true that Joaquín’s individual development is somewhat discreet, but Gutiérrez’s idea was to make a trilogy – the second part is already underway – with each installment focusing more on one of them, so that’s something that should be remedied.

Produced by Guillermo del Toro and written and directed by Jorge R. Gutierrez, The Book of Life is a spectacular animated film for its colorful, baroque, dizzying pace, great soundtrack and unforgettable characters. A film that also stands out for being very different from the trend of the big studios (such as Pixar, Disney or Dreamworks) and that drinks from Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas, but at the same time is very original thanks to its reinterpretation of the legends of Mesoamerican (Mexican) mythology.
Admittedly, the story takes a while to get going and that visual baroque (which I personally love) may be difficult to assimilate for some viewers. But once we get into the story, the film is unstoppable.
